MELBOURNE PARISH COUNCIL

Melbourne is a small town in South Derbyshire, England, which has a village atmosphere, about 4600 residents, a fine Norman church and the historic Melbourne Hall & Gardens. It is situated 8 miles south of the city of Derby, 2 miles north of Ticknall, which is home to Calke Abbey, and 2 miles south of the ancient causeway that runs from the bridge over the River Trent at Swarkestone to Stanton by Bridge. Over the Leicestershire border, but within 5 miles, are located: East Midlands Airport, Donington Park Racetrack and Staunton Harold. The National Forest boundary and Kings Newton lie within the parish of Melbourne.

Melbourne Parish Council's main meetings take place at 7.30pm in the Council Room of the Bill Shone Leisure Centre, High Street, DE73 8GJ, normally on the first Tuesday of each month, except August. See list of dates at the foot of this page*. Members of the public are encouraged to attend meetings and 15 minutes is set aside at the start of each meeting for their participation. However, members of the public are only allowed to speak during the rest of the meeting if the Council agree to suspend Standing Orders.

The Annual Parish Meeting, when the public can come along and have a longer say, is held before the March meeting.

Officers are elected at the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council in May.

Please view the MAP OF MELBOURNE, produced July 2006 by Jayne Wright, or copy the postcode DE73 8GJ into www.streetmap.co.uk for more detail of the Leisure Centre location.

Quality Council Status achieved
A presentation on July 4 2006 by Councillor Derek Orchard, Chairman of the Derbyshire Quality Council Accreditation Committee, took place in the Bill Shone Leisure Centre.
Councillor Orchard said that it marked the end of quite a long and not an easy process: he paid tribute to the work of the Clerk, Norman Hill, who achieved a distinction in his Q C examinations.
